Our community is blessed with the wisdom and richness of a lifetime of
experience that only senior citizens can provide. Weatherford seniors are an active and
vital group that contributes mightily and in varied ways to the community.
The center is home to the Weatherford Nutritional Center for Senior Citizens, which operates a homebound meals program for those unable to come to the center. In addition, the RECAP nutrition program is offered at a nominal cost daily, Monday through Friday, at the center for seniors. Seniors, by the thousands, come to the center for the "four Es"; entertainment, eating, education and exercise. Arts and crafts, music, board and card games, health services, trips and tours, classes, social events, and holiday celebrations all may be found in abundance at the Pioneer Center. For seniors and people with disabilities, the center owns a 24-passenger bus that takes people to the center for noon meals, to health care appointments, shopping trips in town, and to out-of-town trips scheduled by the senior citizens at the Van Horn Manor. Passengers are charged 50 cents per bus trip; the city employs the driver and helps with the expense and servicing of the bus. Alterra Sterling House, located next door to Van Horn Manor, is an assisted living facility that offers an independent lifestyle with the peace of mind that assistance is always available. Legacy Square is at 800 Gartrell Place and can be reached at (580) 772-6600. Van Horn Manor is a unique community for young-at-heart retired senior citizens. The complex is located at 900 Gartrell Place in Weatherford on beautifully landscaped grounds just adjacent to the Pioneer Center. Karla Vandersee, manager can be reached at 772-7414 and welcomes a call at any time. Southwestern Oklahoma Development Authority (SWODA) provides services for area seniors, including the Area Agency on Aging and an Eldercare program. Other nursing homes available are Weatherford Living Center, Little Bird Healthcare, and United Methodist Health Care Center in Clinton. |
